Can A Chiropractor Help With A Sprained Ankle?

6/1/2016

Ankle sprains are not only physically painful; they can also be financially painful. Additionally, if a person with an ankle injury does not receive the proper type of care they may lose mobility in the joint, which will accelerate the development of arthritis later in life. Another serious concern when it comes to a sprained ankle is the chance that the injury will occur again.

There are several popular care methods for a sprained ankle such as heat, cold and of course professional care. However, have you ever considered seeking chiropractic care for a sprained ankle? While most people associate this type of care with the spine, chiropractors are able to treat a vast amount of other parts of the body as well, including the ankle.

A sprained ankle typically occurs when a joint capsule or ligament becomes strained beyond the typically range of motion. There may be a tear in the ligament in the case of a severe sprain. When you seek chiropractic care for a sprained ankle, the first thing that will be done is a complete evaluation of the ankle. This is to ensure that no tears or fractures are present that would require other types of professional care.

In the past it was assumed that a person with a sprained ankle should wait for the swelling to go down prior to seeking any type of mobility treatment. However, the fact is that performing some type of exercise for the range of motion of the joint without any type of resistance or weight can be beneficial and lead to a shorter period of down time.

Some chiropractors can perform special techniques on the ankle to help promote healing and increase the ankle’s range of motion.

The acute stage of a sprained ankle, which is when the area is still swollen, is the best time to begin the rehabilitation process. A chiropractor will be able to increase the effectiveness by adding resistance or weight with each subsequent visit. Another type of treatment that may be used by a chiropractor for the treatment of a sprained ankle is the balancing on stability disks or BOSU balls. This is because these tools incorporate weight bearing exercises with range of motion exercises.

Seeking chiropractic treatment for a sprained ankle canalso reduce the chance of other problems emerging from the injury, such as back pain or a weak ankle joint. Since a sprained ankle usually requires one to use crutches, that can take a toll on your posture and lower back. So there are many benefits to seeing a chiropractor as part of your recovery process.

Remember to always consult your chiropractor or physician before taking any health advice.

Relieve Trigeminal Neuralgia with Acupuncture Treatment!

11/1/2014

(NaturalNews) Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical technique that involves the insertion of extremely fine needles on carefully chosen points throughout the body for therapeutic benefit. A recent study in the journal Medical Acupuncture demonstrated a significant beneficial effect when acupuncture treatments were administered to patients who were suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) manifests as a severe stabbing or electric shock-like pain along the path of the trigeminal nerve. The discomfort is usually felt on only one side of the face, generally in the area of the cheek, eye, and lower portion of the face. The mechanism of pain production is not fully understood, but studies suggest that TN is often associated with demyelination of trigeminal sensory fibers.

While some patients respond to moderate doses of single-drug therapy and microvascular decompressions (MVD`s), many others suffer through prolonged unsuccessful treatment approaches. This includes large doses of medications with adverse effects, complications related to surgery, and postoperative relapse of symptoms. The side effects of the various antiepileptic medications often prescribed for TN patients include dizziness, ataxia, nausea, vomiting, hematological abnormalities, and cardiac arrhythmia. In addition, a high proportion of TN patients take pain medications including narcotics.

All 7 female participants and 4 of the 5 men in the study responded favorably to acupuncture. Five of the patients were even able to discontinue their medications following complete remission of the TN. One of these 5 participants required only 2 acupuncture treatments to reach complete remission, while the others required from 3 to 9 treatments to get this result.

Acupuncture has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a scientific therapeutic modality with an effective pain-relieving ability. The beauty of acupuncture treatments is that they are virtually devoid of side effects, non-invasive and extremely safe. It is postulated that the insertion of acupuncture needles causes enhanced blood flow to the affected area. With multiple acupuncture treatments, the cumulative effect may actually lead to nerve repair in the case of the demyelinated trigeminal sensory fibers mentioned in the first paragraph.

Herbal medicine can also be used together with the above acupuncture protocol to enhance the effect. An often used Chinese Herbal Formula for TN patients is known as xue fu zhu yu tang. This combination of 11 Chinese herbs includes peach kernel (Persicae Semen), safflower petals (Carthami Flos), Szechuan lovage root (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Chinese angelica root (Angelicae sinensis Radix) as the first 4 herbs. These herbs are considered in the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to have a strong invigorating or circulating quality, and serve the role of alleviating pain by eliminating blockages or stagnations in the body.

The TN study mentioned above concludes that acupuncture treatment should be considered before more invasive intervention is attempted. This agrees with clinical results that many acupuncture clinics have been reporting. However, it should be noted that this particular study had a relatively small group of participants, and did not employ a randomized, double-blind format. It will be useful to seek further scientific validation of the effect of acupuncture in TN treatment.

How can chiropractic care benefit athletes?

8/1/2014

Whether you are a weekend athlete or a professional, there are a few things that all athletes have in common. They want to have the best possible performance in their chosen sport, and they both can get injured.

Let's take the weekend athlete, or for that matter, anyone who enjoys exercising. Injuries happen, pure and simple. While they can be minimized, they cannot be totally avoided. If a person participates enough in any physical activity, eventually that person will get hurt to some degree. The way in which one treats his injuries determines how fast one recovers and how quickly one can get back to the activity he enjoys.

Athletes may ask themselves why they get injured? They stretch out, and feel like they are in pretty good shape. So, why? Usually there is a very simple formula. In most cases, we play too hard, too long, or too fast. In the case of household duties such as spring cleaning, do any of us warm up before carrying those boxes into the crawl space of our ceilings? This may not seem like a sports injury, but in fact, overuse syndromes or playing full speed before we are really warmed up are the major causes of sports injuries. Simple household chores, while done cold, can mimic a sports injury to some extent.

If an athlete gets hurt, what can be done to get him back on the field? Rest is usually a good thing, but by itself, can take a very long time.

Chiropractic offers a balanced approach to the treatment and the healing of sports injuries. By using the chiropractic adjustment to return spinal segments to their normal mobility and by using physical therapy to help the supportive tissues (muscles, tendons, & ligaments), chiropractic physicians help the injured areas return to normal function. Combined with some rest to help the healing process, athletes will find their way back on the court. Afterward, better strategies for exercise and stretching will be discussed with the athlete to help him stay on the straight and narrow path to better enjoyment of his chosen sport.

Many professional athletes are utilizing chiropractic care more and more because they realize that it helps them maximize athletic performance. Articles continue to appear in major newspapers and magazines citing such stars as Arnold Schwartzeneger, former boxing champ Evander Holyfield, and football stars such as Emmit Smith and Joe Montana proclaiming the benefits that chiropractic has meant for their careers. More and more professional and college teams are utilizing care for that same reason.

If you can remember that the whole premise of chiropractic health care is to restore spinal health so that the body has the best opportunity to maximize proper function, it is not hard to understand why the Pros enjoy what chiropractic has to offer.

If you are having dizziness, your chiropractor can help.

10/3/2013

When someone experiences dizziness, also called vertigo, the whole world seems to spin out of control with the nearest solid object becoming a lifesaver.

Vertigo is a common complaint, especially after head and neck trauma. It may come from problems in the inner ear, or from disturbances in pathways in the nervous system.  The experience can be impact your whole world, causing nausea, vomiting, and sweating.

If you are having trouble with vertigo, your chiropractor may be able to help. In a recent report in Livestrong, chiropractic solutions are outlined.

Chiropractic manipulation can help solve vertigo:  “Your chiropractor will use manipulation targeting joints that are not moving properly. In the upper neck, faulty motion patterns create misinformation about body position and movement going from the joints to the brain. This type of vertigo, called cervicogenic vertigo, can be helped by chiropractic manipulation.”

Positioning Maneuvers: The inner ear houses the body’s true balance center, the vestibulocochlear system. This complex system of fluid-filled tubes lined with hair-like sensors provides information to the central nervous system about position and movement. In some individuals, debris may accumulate in there. If this debris settles on sensitive areas within the tubes, it may result in vertigo.

If the patient’s vertigo appears to be coming from the inner ear, a chiropractor may use the Epley Maneuver to reposition the debris to a more innocuous position.

Your chiropractor will have exercises to help too.  Exercises like the Brandt-Daroff technique have the person sit on the edge of a bed and flop first to one side, back upright, then to the other side at one-minute intervals. Tai chi exercise may also help as slow, controlled movements provide a safe way to focus on your body movements and balance.

Your chiropractor will discuss your diet and daily habits to pinpoint other reasons for vertigo. Tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, and other substances that stimulate or depress the nervous system may become triggers. And non-prescription sleeping pills or antihistamines can spark dizziness. Your chiropractor may also suggest meditation, relaxation, or breathing techniques to regain control.

As you pursue diet, new daily habits, and relaxation techniques, be sure to discuss changes with your doctor to complete your health picture.

VESTIBULAR DISORDER:

I was diagnosed with Vestibular Disorder.  I was told by two doctors there was nothing that could be done for me.
I went to see Dr. Kim and he gave me hope.  He's been treating me for a few months and it has definitely helped.  The dizziness is not as frequent nor is it as severe.  I have chronic sinus problems as well which makes the disorder worse.  He is also working on my sinuses and it has helped also.  I'm not having the migraines or the bad headaches that I did have.

There is help out here when you're told there isn't any!  I would recommend Dr. Kim highly!

--Margaret H.

CERVICAL PAIN:

Over a year now, I have experienced sharp nerve pain in the cervical area of my neck.  After a year of non-surgical treatments from a neurosurgeon and neurologist, I had NO relief to date.

After a recommendation, I gave Dr. Kim a try out.  I have experienced relief from sharp pain and discomfort.  I can testify to the fact that I am experiencing temporary relief and enjoying getting my active lifestyle back.

-Jerry

P.S.  Jennifer has been nothing sort of perfect in assisting me during this process.

Thank you to ALL our patients for entrusting us with your health.  If you know someone who is dealing with Vestibular Disorder or experiencing sharp pains in the neck, head, and shoulders, please have them contact us to schedule a visit with Dr. Kim!
