Trochanteric Bursitis of the Hip

8/1/2015

In many areas of the body, muscles and tendons must slide over and against one another during movement. At each of these places, a small sac of lubricating fluid helps the muscles and tendons move properly. Usually these sacs of fluid, called bursae, function to reduce friction, but if they become swollen and irritated they can cause pain.

One common area where this occurs is in the bursa on the outside of the hip, called the trochanteric bursa. This creates a condition known as trochanteric bursitis. This condition is common in older individuals. It may also occur in younger patients who are extremely active in exercises such as walking, running, or biking.

Trochanteric bursitis is often treated successfully with chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments/manipulations are performed to help restore normal biomechanics to the hip joint. This is where chiropractic manipulation has an advantage over other specialties. It is important to manipulate and stretch capsular joint restrictions during the treatment phase. Chiropractors use hands on treatment and stretching to help restore full hip range of motion. Improving strength and coordination in the buttock and hip muscles also enables the femur to move in the socket smoothly and can help reduce friction on the bursa. You may need chiropractic treatments for four to six weeks before full motion and function return.

Younger patients who have this condition because of overuse can usually be treated by reducing their activity or changing the way they do their activity. Combining this with an exercise program of stretching and strengthening and various modalities such as ice, electrical muscle stimulation, heat and ultrasound.

Healing Work-Related-Lifting Injuries with Chiropractic

5/1/2014

Back injury problems due to improper lifting techniques are all too common, especially work related lifting injuries.  According to FamilyDoctor.org, the proper way to lift a heavy item is to get as close as possible to the item and use your legs and arms to lift, bending your legs and keeping the back straight as you lift up.  The heavy load should be held at chest-level to avoid straining your back muscles. Of course, these tips may be a little too late if you have improperly lifted a heavy item and have caused work related lifting injuries. Sometimes people who lift weights for exercise also hurt their shoulders, knees or cause a herniated disk, stretched ligament or sprain in the back, but work related lifting injuries are most common.  These injuries are often seen in jobs that require physical labor such as bending, lifting, moving and carrying heavy items.

SYMPTOMS OF  LIFTING INJURIES
If you injure your back or another area of your body through lifting something heavy, you will probably know it right away.  You may feel pain, stiffness or muscle spasms immediately and continued symptoms that might continue for several days or for several weeks. For work related lifting injuries, this may mean that you will be unable to perform your typical job duties and may need to file for workmen’s compensation as a result.  Ask your manager or human resources representative for more information.

TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS FOR LIFTING INJURIES
A doctor can generally diagnose injuries caused by lifting and may use additional diagnostic tools such as an MRI or an x-ray if a herniated disc is suspected.

In addition, a doctor may prescribe short-term bed rest and anti-inflammatory pain medicine such as ibuprofen to help manage pain. Ice packs may also reduce swelling and pain.  You may be prohibited from working or lifting items for a certain amount of time if the issue is caused by work related lifting injuries.

HEALING LIFTING INJURIES THROUGH CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT
While traditional treatment methods may help improve the symptoms of a lifting injury, a skilled chiropractor can help treat the issue and re-align the bones, joints and muscles to shorten the severity of the symptoms and improve the condition of the spine, joints and muscles.  This is called spinal manipulation and adjustment.

In addition, hydrotherapy like  heat and ice treatments,  help reduce pain and swelling and using active release therapy to get tight, tense muscles to relax and release.  This can reduce muscle spasms and pain.

DR KIM WAS MY LAST RESORT FOR VERY PAINFUL CARPEL TUNNEL AFTER SEEING A HAND SPECIALIST THAT ACTUALLY MADE IT WORSE.  THE HAND SPECIALIST ADMINISTERED A SHOT IN MY WRIST TO KILL THE PAIN...WHEN  THE SHOT WORE OFF 3 WEEKS LATER THE PAIN WAS VERY INTENSE AT THE WRIST, SHOT UP MY ARM INTO THE ELBOW AND ON UP MY ARM.

DR KIM, GOD BLESS HIM, STOPPED THE PAIN IN MY FIRST VISIT BY MANIPULATING MY WRIST.  I CONTINUE SEEING HIM ONCE A MONTH FOR ADJUSTMENTS AND I AM STILL PAIN FREE!  I DIDN'T GO SEE HIM FOR THE NEUROMA IN MY LEFT FOOT, THE ALLERGIES OR THE TENSION IN MY SHOULDERS, BUT THOSE ALSO ARE NO LONGER A PROBLEM FOR ME.

DR KIM HAS HELPED MY HUSBAND WITH LOWER BACK PAIN AND MY DAUGHTER THAT HAD SEVERE KNEE PROBLEMS AND "WAS" ON CRUTCHES.  NOW HE IS TREATING MY SON WHO HAS 3 BULGING DISCS IN HIS NECK AND PAIN IN HIS SHOULDER...SINCE HE IS A POLICE OFFICER HE NEEDS TO BE PAIN FREE.  HE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE AFTER ONLY A COUPLE OF WEEKS...

THANK YOU DR KIM AND  JENNIFER FOR ALL YOUR WONDERFUL WORK... MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU BOTH!

"I have had back pain, specifically low back, since I can remember.  It eventually just became part of my life and I disregarded it.  Just after a few visits with Dr. Kim, my back felt better and there was no more continuous pain that I had become use to.  Now, I come in once a month for tune-ups to keep my back in align and to help prevent my back from becoming that bad ever again."

--Brian D.
